Opposition mounts to proposed bike path A proposed 13-mile South Shore bike way that would link the Bethpage and the Jones Beach Bike paths is being called unsafe by local leaders because, they said, it runs through busy streets. "This is a real safety and traffic issue...the Town of Hempstead is not opting into the plan," said Susie Trenkle, Town spokesperson who added that none of the residents have asked for a bike path. The planning stages have the $400k path starting at the Massapequa Preserve portion at Sunrise Highway, running along Prospect Place in Massapequa, crossing Hicksville Road, down Maple Street, through the Tackapausha Preserve in Seaford and meeting up, eventually, with Cedar Creek Park which goes to Jones Beach. N.C. Legislator Peter Schmitt said that although the County Legislation has yet to be consulted about the idea, he opposes what he has been told. "There is no place along Hicksville Road where we can put about 6,000 bikes a day where people won't get killed or that won't cause traffic problems," said Schmitt adding that he would be happy to sit down with the Town and talk about the idea. But that route isn't set in stone according to officials who said it was premature to discuss the idea. "Nothing has been decided yet," said Town of Oyster Bay spokesperson Phyllis Barry. "We are in the process of applying for funding and then we will sit down with the community and find out what they want." Barry said the idea for the bike path came from a recommendation from the L.I. South Shore Estuary Reserve Council in an effort to help the public enjoy the estuary.
