Health care, utilities drive up MSD budget The Massapequa School District is proposing a $167.5 million budget for the coming year, an increase of 6.98 percent from the current budget of $156.6. The new spending plan shows increases in severeal major areas: special education ($2.8 million); student transportation ($1.6 million); fuel oil and electricity ($800,149); health insurance ($500,000) and social security payments ($431.26). All other areas show a 2.99 percent increase over this year, said school officials. In discussing the budget with the public recently, the district outlined the history of per-pupil expenditures for the district over the past 16 years, comparing it with other districts in the state and the county. The figures showed that over that period of time, the New York State average increase was almost 105 percent. Nassau County's average was 70.4 percent and Massapequa's was 76.6 percent. Those figures adjusted for inflation come to 34.34 percent, 11.69 percent and 9.85 percent respectively. Helping Massapequa hold the line is its state-aid package. In a press release by New York State Assemblyman Joseph S. Saladino, the lawmaker said he anticipates that Massapequa will receive an additional 12.35 percent in state aid, representing an additional $2.5 million next year. "These monies are designed to protect our children's education and protect property taxpayers," said Saladino in making the announcement. "It is my hope that schools will keep spending in check so that all of this relief may translate to easing the burden on over-taxed property owners. Massapequa is expected to receive a total of $22.3 million in state aid for the 2008-09 school year.
