Massapequa to be commended for fighting for $2M more in state aid

Dear Editor:

The Massapequa residents are to be commended for their diligent efforts in helping to obtain a significant increase in our state aid for the 2008/09 school year. It was truly a concentrated group effort, with the community attending the Farmingdale Fair Share Rally, as well as cards, calls and visits with our legislators, that brough these positive results. And our legislators who heard us are also to be commended.

The increase to Massapequa School District approximates an additional $2 million, which the School Board indicated last week, would go directly towards lowering our tax levy. The state aid increase is a start, however, there are many issues, such as unfunded mandates, which must be addressed in Albany in order to relieve our tax burden. In addition, all schools must take a hard look at current practices in budgeting and work to ensure a quality education and the ability of all taxpayers to continue to afford to live in our towns.
