St. Martin of Tours School students celebrate Earth Day
St. Martin of Tours School in Amityville celebrated Earth Day. Students from grades first through fourth went outside to plant flowers for Earth Day. Principal Kathleen Razzetti and Keith Mainhart, director for St. Martin's Parish Outreach, spoke to the students.
The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. This was the day that people started making promises to help our environment. Mainhart let the students know that they will be starting and taking care of an ecology garden in front of the school. All the plants that will be planted are indigenous to Long Island. For this Earth Day the students planted flowers that had been used to celebrate Easter in the church. St. Martin's school has a new look out front. The concrete and blacktop that was once in front of the building has been replaced with a green lawn and the new flowers.
