Former colleague of school board candidate defends his fiscal policies

Dear Editor,

I read with disbelief a letter in your paper from a Mr. McLeod in regards to Gary Bennett, insulting his financial intellect. I can tell this man, that as a person who has known Mr. Bennett for over 30 years, to imply that he is borderline ridiculous when it comes to finance and investments is, and of itself, completely ridiculous. Mr. Bennett is a self made millionaire who controls realestate holdings commercial and residential, in 5 US States and the Fire Island National Sea Shore. He is a man who grew up in a modest family and through his investment savvy alone continues to developed holdings he is too modest to reveal. I have been in the financial game many years on wall street and men of Mr. Bennett's financial skill are few and far between.

Mr. McLeod should also know that Mr. Bennett was instrumental, in cooperation with congressman Rick Lazio, in obtaining federal funding to help protect the National Sea Shore of Fire Island, Long Island's barrier from the Atlantic Ocean. Some funding was also granted to help save the Montauk Light House, not associated with Mr Bennett. The community should know how fortunate they are to have Mr. Bennett's interest in trying to help gain control of the taxes that are destroying Long Island's economy.

Before you jump to conclusions, Mr. Bennett feels all these issues are not related to education and therefore are irrelevant. And, you say he is bending the truth to get elected? He needs to get involved with you like he needs a hole in the head. I for one don't even know why he cares when people like you and the man I heard at Mr. Bennett's March rally, look to abuse a man who is only giving the facts as he sees them. What is all the fuss about if he is so wrong? As far as Mr. Bennett's irresponsibility, I can only say as the song goes, call me irresponsible too.
