Bennett responds to criticisms from fellow budget committee member

Dear Editor,

I would like to apologize for Mr. McLeod's letter in last week's issue. I do know how your paper dislikes being used for personal attacks. In view of the School tax situation in Massapequa, I suppose you have to give everyone their say in spite of politics. I am somewhat flattered that Mr. McLeod is so infatuated with me that he believes my opinions and views are so important they are worthy of comment. This is what our system depends on and needs, public involvement. I'm glad I am contributing to that.

What disturbs me is, Mr. McLeod was not present at Meet The Candidates Night. One would think he would be eager to hear me in comparison with his candidates and participate. He would have been able to ask questions and get answers face to face in public debate. Why would he and the wordy individual present at my March 5th rally, decide not to show in a fair and controlled public forum?

Maybe the answer of these questions has to do with the issues themselves. It is easy to argue in a room full of supporters but quite different when you stand alone for the people and issues that you feel are right and in need of change, regardless of politics or special interests.
Gary T. Bennett
The writer is a candidate for the Massapequa School
