Perrino calls allegations politically motivated
Public commentary

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to your article "MSD Controversy over Instrument Repair Raises Debate" in which Mr. Murphy of Atlantic Instruments clearly stated it is not unusual for a school to pick up the cost of repairing an instrument damaged during a school function, which is exactly what an administrator in the district advised me. In fact, in a letter Mr. Murphy shared with me that he also sent to the Massapequa Post on April 13, 2008, he states: "In my 27 years of business, it had always been the standard operating procedure that an instrument damaged during a school event would be billed to the district; there was nothing unusual in this request." Why the school district would come out publicly and disagree with Mr. Murphy, a respected businessman in our community, and knowing the directive I was given, makes no sense.

Contrary to the statement by school spokesman Mike Conte, the instrument was damaged while in the sole and exclusive possession of school personnel. Unfortunately, the district's statement is nothing more than a politically motivated attack by a few central office administrators, conveniently timed before the school board election.

I have been a diligent steward of the public trust and its money for the past 6 years. Student achievement has increased dramatically through my efforts and those of my fellow board members, along with the teachers and parents of this community. Colleges from across the country that have previously passed over Massapequa students are now giving them a good, hard look, and granting many of them admission. As the central office administrators who authorized Mr. Conte's statement regarding the instrument matter well know, I have always advocated for the best interest of the children and residents of this community and not their agendas. In looking out for our students and this community the administrators know that I have never been a rubber stamp. I ask the tough questions and demand accountability. I have the experience and integrity to continue to lead this school district to excellence. This attempt by a few to derail my candidacy will not deter me from that objective.

Christine Lupetin Perrino Massapequa School Board Trustee
