Dr. Milton Welt: MPK Ophthalmologist and active Lion

Former longtime 'Pequan Dr. Milton Welt died in the Newtown Memorial Hospital in Newtown, New Jersey on May 16, 2008. He was 93 years old and spent many years as a local volunteer. In 2003, he was awarded an Environmental Quality Award by the Environmental Protection Agency for his work as Environmental Chair for the Nassau County Lions Club in which he instituted tree planting worldwide to address global warming. A charter member of the Long Island Lions Club, he was also past district governor.

"He was a wonderful friend and a dedicated Lion," said Lion charter member and Massapequa Village Park Trustee Harry Jacobson who knew him for more than 53 years. "He was a great doctor and a great man who'll be missed."

Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Massapequa Park for more than 50 years before moving to New Jersey. A graduate of New York University in Manhattan and Geneva University in Switzerland, he spent more than 40 years in private practice as an ophthalmologist on Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park. He was affiliated with both the Brooklyn Ear & Eye Hospital and the Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.

Dr. Welt was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Medical Academy. He was also past president of Temple Sinai in Massapequa and trustee of the New York Oceans Science Lab in Montauk.

He leaves behind his wife Leone (nee Wicht); his daughters: Amelia Katzen and her husband Joshua of Newton, Massachusetts and Michele Buchbauer and her husband Charles of Andover, New Jersey; and his grandchildren: Sonja, Abe, Eli, Anna and Sam.

Services were held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel in Clifton, New Jersey on May 18, 2008, followed by interment at King Solomon Cemetery in Clifton, New Jersey.
