Robert W. Stuart, longtime member of Simpson Church

Longtime Massapequa Park resident and loving family man Robert Walter Stuart died on June 13, 2008. The 86-year old had adopted many rescued dogs over the years, which he loved to walk in the Massapequa Preserve.

Robert Walter Stuart
"Our dad knew everyone in town," said his son, Don. "It was his favorite part of the day, the socializing." He was known by many for walking his beloved Irish Setters in the park every morning and chatting to fellow neighbors at the IGA.

Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Lynbrook for many years and served as a U.S. Marine during World War II. He moved to Massapequa Park in 1952 and lived on McKinley Street for 56 years. In his youth, he was a world class track star who went to Fordham College on a scholarship and ran with some of the fastest men in the world. He was also a great basketball and football player, according to his sons, and was a Jones Beach LifeGuard during the 1940s. Mr. Stuart spent his career in Manhattan insurance companies and was a longtime parishioner at Simpson United Methodist Church in Amityville.

He was also a longtime and loyal member of Simpson United Methodist Church in Amityville.

"He was a lovely man; kind, warm, gentle and encouraging said Margaret, a secretary at the church who knew both Mr. Stuart and his wife Maureen for many years. "He was very supportive and faithful to the church." In addition to his son Don and his wife Maureen of Massapequa Park, he also leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Elsie; his other children: Barbara Lynn Richard and her husband Raymond and Paul S. and his wife Catherine of Massapequa Park; his grandchildren: Timothy Richard, Robin Richard, Jeremy, Kellie Rose, Peter, John, Michael and David; and his sister: Ruth Schaper. He was predeceased by his sister, Lynne Guevjian. A Memorial Service was held June 21, 2008 at the Simpson United Methodist Church in Amityville followed by private arrangements.

Donations in Mr. Stuart's name can be sent to Simpson United Methodist

Church, 30 Locust Avenue, Amityville, New York 11701 or to the North Shore Animal League, 25 David Avenue, Port Washington, New York 11050.
