Oyster Bay Town Councilman Angelo Delligatti to run for District Court in November; replacement being sought
by Tiffany Elliott
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Angelo Delligatti is running for District Court in November. The longtime Massapequa resident is running on the Republican, Democratic, Conservative and Independence lines, making his election to that seat a near certainty. If he is seated, he will be leaving the Town after 30 years, first as Supervisor and then as a Councilman. "Replacing him will be a tall order to fill," said Town Supervisor John Venditto, a friend and co-worker of more than 30 years. "Angelo is a gentleman of the first order and I have great respect for him. I'll really miss his valuable advice and support and ToBay will be losing a superb Town official." Delligatti, who has been on the Town Board for 24 years, is credited with initiating the Town's award winning recycling S.O.R.T and hazardous waste S.T.O.P. programs, and spearheading the drive to make the Town a "Tree City U.S.A." by planting trees. He decided to seek the post on the court because the time was right. "I think it's time for younger blood on the board, time for a new perspective," he said, adding that he has been thinking about a judgeship for a long time. With the retirement of Judge Lea Ruskin, he decided to seize the opportunity, he said. A lawyer with his own practice, Delligatti began his career in public service when he was elected Councilman in 1985. He won the Supervisor's seat in 1978, which he held for two years. From 1993 to the present, he has served as a Town Councilman.

The Nassau County 4th District Court is in Hempstead and covers Glen Cove and Oyster Bay Town.
"I enjoyed being on the board and I will miss it, but it's time for me to go," said Delligatti, who has also been endorsed by the Democratic Party for his judgeship. Fiscally conservative, Delligatti has helped keep budgets down during his time on the board and has volunteered much of his time as a coach for the Massapequa Soccer Cub, St. Rose of Lima CYO and the Massapequa Coast Little League. He is also involved with the Order of the Sons of Italy, the Columbus Lodge and the Knights of Columbus, to name a few. He is a married father of two sons. "He has certainly paid his dues, and really gave his entire being to public service," said Venditto. Town GOP leader James Picken was not available for comment. however, Alex Sklavos, the Democratic leader for the Town of Oyster Bay said that the decision to nominate Delligatti was made by the County leader, Jay Jacobs, but that he fully supported it. "Nominations for judgeships are not the same as nominations for political posts," said Sklavos. The object is to find the person who will be the most qualified for the job and as far as we are concerned, Angelo will make an excellent judge."
Venditto said that the only prerequisite for joining the board is community involvement. "We will be looking for someone who is passionate about helping their community in some way, and we'd like to find someone from Massapequa or Massapequa Park," said the Supervisor. "It'll be hard to replace him, but I know there's abundant talent out there; we just need to do an extensive search."
