Don Carney, Copiague resident and Amityville Rotarian

Don Carney
Former Amityville Rotary Club president and real estate salesperson Donald J. Carney died Aug. 10, 2008 after a valiant struggle with leukemia. The 67-year old was a softspoken man with a big heart, according to his family and friends.

"The many good and kind deeds he performed during his lifetime have left indelible marks on the lives of many people," said his wife, Jean who added that her husband epitomized the Rotary Club's motto: "service above self." Mr. Carney, a resident of Copiague, was president of the Amityville Rotary Club from 2007 to 2008.

"Don was very well liked and respected," said Jeff Gootkin, president of the Amityville Rotary Club, who knew Mr. Carney for about three years. "He was the founder of a great program we have called Project Redirect, which supports a shelter in Copiague year round. He was really caring and giving. The club will miss him."

His wife Jean was president of the Lindenhurst Rotary Club at the same time, so the couple made twice the impact on the organization, according to Mr. Gootkin.

Born March 25, 1941 to James D. and Mary M. (nee Fay) in New York City, he served in the U.S. Air Force in the missile defense department from 1959 to 1963. He lived in Center Moriches and Long Beach before moving to Copiague in 2002. For several years, he worked for Remax New Island Real Estate in Lindenhurst as a sales person. He was the current governor of the Narrasketuck Yacht Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading and traveling with his family.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Carney is survived by his daughters, Denise Jones of Albany, New York and Dianne Foxhall of Poughkeepsie, New York. His grandchildren, Lindsay, Morgan and Aidon Jones and Taylor, Ryan and Kiley Foxhall; and his brother, James D. of Sacramento, California also survive him. He was predeceased by his brother Edward H.

A Prayer Service was conducted by the Rev. David W. Anglin, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Amityville, Aug. 13, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home, Broadway, Amityville. Interment followed in Breslau Cemetery, Lindenhurst, with military honors.

Donations in Mr. Carney's name can be sent to The Friends of Don Carney, c/o Rotary Club of Amityville, P.O. Box 208, Amityville, New York 11701.
