Former Massapequan to run in Boston Marathon for charity
Amy Lepre Brock, a 1994 Massapequa High School graduate, will run the prestigious Boston Marathon as a member of the Children’s Hospital Boston Miles for Miracles Team. Amy is a research scientist studying cancer biology at Harvard Medical School. After graduating from Massapequa High School, she earned a BS at MIT and then a PhD at Children’s Hospital and Harvard University. She decided to participate in the Miles for Miracles Team as a way to interact with the larger biomedical community beyond her laboratory walls.
Through a partnership with the Boston Athletic Association’s Charity Program, Children’s receives invitational waivers for the Boston Marathon®. This year, more than 150 runners will wear the Miles for Miracles singlet. Many runners are also matched with an inspirational young child who has been treated at the hospital, providing an extra incentive to help them reach the finish line. Amy will be running in honor of EJ, a 13-year-old boy with osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic disease that results in brittle bones. EJ has been treated for more than 300 broken bones in his short lifetime. Together with his family, he will be cheering for the marathoners as they complete the 26.1 mile course.
