Attention Massapequa Park residents: Your recycling day is now Thursday.

The Town of Oyster Bay changed its S.O.R.T. pick up from Wednesday to Thursday last month and tried to get the word out, but apparently not everyone got the message.

“I put my bin out on Tuesday nights and on Wednesday, it was still there,” said Doris Giles, a resident of Massapequa Park. “There was no pick-up and I wondered why.”

Giles called the Town of Oyster Bay for information, and was advised of the day change for recycling.

“I could have been going on like that for months,” said Giles, who doesn’t remember getting any information about the schedule change.

Many residents have called the Town’s Sanitation and Recycling Division, confused as to why their cans were not being picked up on Wednesdays anymore.

Massapequa Park Village was never formally notified, said Mayor James Altadonna.

"We were not made aware of the change and we apologize to our residents for any inconvenience," he said. "I hope we can put a mechanism in place that will strengthen the lines of communication between the Town and the Village."

Town of Oyster Bay officials said they hand delivered postcards to more than 70,000 homes in the Township in December to advise residents about the change.

“It was on cardstock, printed in two colors and it was something that you really couldn’t miss,” said Phyllis Barry, Town spokesperson. “People see that it’s from the Town and think it’s just junk and throw it out. It happens all the time.”

The date change was needed to allow the Town to streamline its employee schedule so that sanitation and S.O.R.T. (Separate Oyster Bay’s Recyclables Today) staff worked on the same days: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“It works out better financially, paperwork-wise and from almost every vantage point to have the all men all work on the same schedule,” said Barry. “They also help with snow removal— some of the vehicles are used in snow removal— so it’s easier calling the employees if they are all on the same schedule.”

The recycling schedule change took effect on January 1. The S.O.R.T. program collects co-mingled recycling including: plastics, glass and metals as well as newspaper, junk mail and even tires.
