Nassau Police make arrest in arson incident that took place in Mall in June


The Nassau County police arrested a Massapequa man in Staten Island, charging him in an incident of burglary and arson that occurred at the Westfield Mall at Sunrise June 30, shortly before 7:30 p.m.

According to detectives, Denzel Jones, 23, of 27 Oakley Ave., Massapequa, while employed as a stockperson for Forever 21 in the mall, secreted himself in the stockroom bathroom while the managers secured the store with an audible alarm, enclosed metal gate and waited until all employees left the store.  The defendant then removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash box and set fire to a rack of clothing, by undetermined means and fled the scene through a rear door, setting off a burglary alarm.  The fire was extinguished by the installed sprinkler system.  The Massapequa Fire Department responded and gained access to the store.

No injuries were reported.

The arrest was made Oct. 29 by 7th Squad Detectives. Jones was charged with arson, 2nd degree; burglary, 3rd degree; reckless endangerment, 1st degree, and was arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead, Wed., Oct. 30.
