Plainedge Girls Basketball team wins title

The Plainedge Girls Varsity Basketball Team won the Conference 3-A Championship, the first time the Devils took home this title since 1986.

Lauren Simonelli coaches the team and Katie McSweeney was the team’s leading scorer with 13.8 points and 7 rebounds per game.

The team lost a tough game in the second round of playoffs as the 9-seed to Elmont, which was the #1 seed, 59-47.

Individual player awards went to Juliana Keenan, Katie McSweeney, Alexandra Di Chiara, Lauren Krystall and Ashley Lindsay. These athletes were supported by their team mates: Caitlan McHugh, Samantha Doerner, Kayla Pepe, Marnick Pierre-Louis and Ashley Lindsay, Erica Bauer, Christine Bossert, Regina DiChiara, Deanna Mangino, and Alexa Marigliano.

Also recognized was Coach Simonelli who was awarded the Conference 3A Coach of the Year: 9:3 conference play, 14-7 overall.

School Board and administrators honored the team and its coach at a meeting earlier this month. “We are all very proud of these athletes,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edward A. Salina.
