Two Massapequa residents were arrested and charged this week with starving their two dogs. The arrests, class A misdemeanors, were made by the Nassau County SPCA.

Arrested and charged were Thomas Skuza and his son Thomas Skuza Jr. The SPCA said the two deprived their two dogs, Romeo and Damian, of necessary sustenance, food and water.

Both dogs were found at their home, 153 North Queens Ave., North Massapequa, by Nassau County SPCA Detectives emaciated who said the dog’s ribs, spines, and hips were showing. They were dehydrated with sunken eyes and poor skin turgor.

Romeo and Damian were immediately taken to an animal hospital where they were admitted for initial stabilization and supportive care. The veterinarian's evaluation found both to be underweight with muscle wasting. Romeo had metallic foreign bodies in his stomach, which will likely need to be removed to prevent life threatening complications.

Romeo and Damian are going to need extensive veterinary care including possible surgery, the Nassau County SPCA is asking the public for help. Anyone wishing to help can go to helpstarvingdogs.ncspca.us
