Massapequans remember historic Killian Hotel

The long trek by stagecoach from Massapequa to Manhattan took a full day. Those coming to or from Massapequa were usually exhausted after so many hours on the dusty dirt roads that joined the communities of Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens to New York City.

Long Islanders help elect Barack Obama

On Long Island, voters helped elect Barack Obama on Election day, Nov. 4. Unofficial tallies showed that in Suffolk County, 318,920 voters voted for Obama to McCain's 289,236. In Nassau, the vote was 316,523 for Obama and 272,756 for McCain.

Lady Chiefs get come-from-behind win

Massapequa girls soccer team rallied from a 1-0 near defeat to a 2-1 win on Sat., Nov. 1. In photo, sweeper Andrea Bujacich clears yet another loose ball, late in the game, as the Lady Chiefs go on to defeat Oceanside during the Division 1 semi-final game. Two goals by Kim DeCasare helped the Lady Chiefs during an exciting game.

SFWD offering free water bottles

The campaign aims to save consumers money, protect the environment, and help raise awareness of the high quality of water in the district.

Daleview Care Center celebrates grandparents

On Sun., Sept. 7 Daleview Care Center, a senior care facility, celebrated Gerandparents Day with its annual Family day celebration. Residents, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all celebrated together. There was live entertainment, as well as characters and a petting zoo complete with pony rides.

Ladies Day Luncheon and Fashion Show was held Wed., Aug. 20 and was hosted by Karen Whalen, Gail Ferrari, Judy Hughes and Lisa Gilbrandsen. The event was attended by over 190 guests. The fashions were supplied by J. Stack of Bay Shore and the children's fashions came from Omni Girls of Babylon.

St. William's students received a warm greeting going back to school

Sept. 3 was "back to school" for the 600 plus students of St. William the Abbot School (SWS) in Seaford. As is the tradition at St. William the children were greeted by Principal, Anna Guardino and Assistant Principal, Margaret Grimaldi as well as the entire faculty as they came off the buses to begin an exciting year. The excitement of the first day is always wonderful!

Students at Maria Regina in Seaford collect fruit for Island Harvest

The students from Maria Regina School, in Seaford, recently collected fruit for Island Harvest. Island Harvest is Long Island's largest food rescue organization. Last year, the organization rescued over seven million pounds of food from restaurants, grocery stores, and farms. The food rescued is distributed to soup kitchens, food banks, and shelters.

Plainedge Bobcats football league presented with a grant

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rose Marie Walker announced that registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will begin on Thurs, Nov. 13. YES offers NYS certification training

Loving Massapequa Homemaker Dorothy Sessa

Longtime Massapequa resident Dorothy R. Sessa died Oct. 13, 2008. She was 80 years old and was described by her family as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. According to her husband Robert, she enjoyed nothing more than "spoiling" her beloved grandkids and spending time with her family.

Theo Hesse: World War II Veteran & Loving Patriarch

Theodore A. Hesse, who spent many years living in both Massapequa Park and West Babylon, died Oct. 15, 2008. He was 88. Born in Brooklyn, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Hesse lived on Atlantic Avenue in Massapequa Park for 29 years before moving to West Babylon where he resided for more than 27 years.

Paulson and the entire Bush administration, in a discernible panic, are now pouring $700 billion into the big banks, having already bailed out AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Bear Stearns to the tune of $300 billion.
